Portland, Oregon is fortunate to have forward thinking people who have encouraged the use of rainwater for not only irrigation use, but for indoor water use also. Rainwater from a buildings resource has been viewed as a nuisance to deal with and send to a pipe as soon as possible. Since I began doing rainbarrels back in 2001, I have seen a shift in this belief. Now rainwater off of roofs is being viewed as a resource to be used. Capturing rainwater from the roof and using it later is a great way to use this resource.
Why use rainwater? It is a free resource which falls on your building’s roof and can be captured and used for later. You get free water to use as you like. It is chlorine and fluoride free. It is softer than municipal water so you do not need as much soap in the shower or for laundry.
